“Queer as folk” meets “Tales of the City” in the frozen north of Scandinavia. Josh Reid, cartoonist, lottery winner and philanthropist, enjoys living alone with his dog, drawing his daily strip and running a charity with a handful of dedicated eccentrics. Timo Eklund, down in the big city from a tiny Arctic village, goes wild in a blitz of partying, alcohol and sex. When Josh rescues Timo from an icy death on the streets of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, his reclusive life is turned upside down in this story of love, confusion, betrayal and a lot of pasta.
Giving Timo the chance to paint a series of pictures that tell of the twenty-two-year-olds’ coming out and life as a gay man, Josh opens the door to having his whole existence exposed to public ridicule and puts his life in danger. Warning; this book contains very explicit sex scenes that make “50 shades of Grey” look like a paint chart.
Drama, drama queens, comedy, lust and love prove that the road to Hell, and possibly Heaven, really is paved with good intentions.

Nice People edition by Jonathan Gregory Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Very, very enjoyable!!
This is funny, endearing, romantic, politically conscious, current, and sexy without being sleazy or cheesy.
Absolutely great!!
The blurb for this book doesn't do it justice. It is better than Tales in the City (sorry Mr Maupin) and it is better than QAF (both the British and the US versions). The cover for this book is rather mundane and doesn't do it justice either.
It is an amazing tale of taking a chance on life and taking a chance on love. It is one of those stories about a good Samaritan whose goodness eventually comes back to him in spades and he really deserves it.
I loved this book and it is going on my exquisite reads shelf for 2014.
The story is about Timo and Josh. Timo is a young man who used to be a painter before he got caught up in the party life. Now he is down on his luck, boyfriend gone, home gone, career going no where, friends gone etc He is rescued by Josh who saves him from the cold when Timo is flung out from a night club into the freezing cold streets of Stockholm.
Much puke, headache and diarrhoea later, Josh allows Timo to stay in his flat while Timo gets himself together.
Josh is a knight in shining armour and a professional cartoonist. Along with his trusty steed (a rather large husky that looks like a wolf called Dog) he cares for Timo and shows him a kind of camaraderie and firm compassion and trust that Timo hasn't encountered before. But Josh's life is a well kept secret because Josh is a gay 'Bill Gates'. He is the richest man in Sweden but very much hidden from the public eye.
Josh has had his own experiences of disappointing love, deep satisfying love and love taken away by death, but he has great friends and is happy with his life and his Dog. He has been there, seen that, worn the t-shirt and is able to encourage and support Timo to see that betrayal and loss of a so called loved one is actually not the end of the world. He encouragesTimo to see this as an opportunity to grow.
And he offers Timo the space and a chance to stay with him no strings attached so that Timo can recover and start painting again.
So does Timo seize the day and start anew?
Well of course he does and the two men eventually realise that they are attracted to each other. Josh expresses this in his care of Timo which he gives with much English humour. Timo is just impatient and hungry for Josh, but also aware that this is something different and much deeper, and that Josh is a special kind of person. He is 'nice people'.
And so Timo sets his heart to focus on his painting but he also decides he wants Josh and is determined to keep Josh for himself.
And can he do it?
Yes he can and does with lots of lumps and bumps and emerging love along the way. And there is an excellent cast of supporting characters ( friends, family, colleagues, enemies and strangers) who help them, watch them, envy them and also love them.
This is such a great story, really romantic, humorous, engaging, entertaining etc etc And long too. The story is a good solid read and it doesn't get boring along the way but held my attention as I followed Timo and Josh and saw their attraction for each other grow into friendship and their friendship grow into love.
It is always a good thing to go poking around the list of LAMDA lit. nominees and hunt through their back list because there is always treasure at the end of those rainbows. I have come across some really excellent authors who don't publish for DSP, MLR or the other familiar publishers that are the staple for m/m readers. Jonathan Gregory is one of those authors ( a treasure at the end of the rainbow) and one of the LAMDA nominees this year. But instead of starting with his mystery series I decided to give this contemporary story a try and I am really happy that I did.
A really lovely story and satisfying read.
This is a book that grabs you (by the goolies probably if you are a gay guy) and carries you along. Full of colourful characters and fantastically visual descriptions of places and people. Rolicking times!
Fantastic, brilliant, amazing, gorgeous, beautiful! Absolute stunning story that made me cry and laugh and everything between!
Really really hope that Jonathan will write a following up book on this great story! What happened then?
Lots of love and thanks for the great hours of entertaining when reading!
Nice People actually reminds me a lot of Tales in the City, but in a very contemporary way. It's real life, it's today, it's funny and it's very gay. Even raunchy gay sometimes. I hate some of the characters and that's a good thing. And I adore a couple of them. Maybe because it's partly very romantic. Because so am I.
